Has been/was never found

Hi everybody,
Recently I studied a text, and it said that a woman was killed and that the identity of her killer is still unknown to this day.
I wanted to know if we could say of that event that:
a- her killer has never been found
b- Her killer was never found.
My feeling is that b- would sound better, since those tragic events took place long ago/in the past AND also because the investigations stopped a long time ago,
but I think a- would also be correct.
Could someone, please, explain the subtle differences between the two sentences.
Many thanks in advance,
Cheers.

Hello,
En anglais britannique ce sera plutôt has never been found; en anglais américain ce sera plutôt was never found.
