We are going to deal with notion Myth and Heroes. To begin with, I would like to give a definition of the notion. A myth is a popular believe on which social values are often based. The myths have a symbolic power and this is a reason why they survive as long as they do while a hero can be someone who is ready to sacrifice his or her life in order to make things evolved positively. He is admired and can be fictional and have powers or he can be real and fight for common interests. People can refer to them and they are presents in our daily lives. So we can wonder how do people become myths or heroes ?
Firstly, we are going to talk about daily heroes, secondly we are going to show that there are heroes who are made up to embody and spread some ideology.
To begin with daily heroes, I think that there are two factors that lead to people acting heroically: The circumstances they find themselves in and how they react to these circumtances. To my mind, the document that seem to best illustrate the idea of daily heroes is the BBC’s article about a terrorist attack on a train in France. Three American men hailed as heroes for overpowering a heavily armed gunman. They have overcome their fears and they did not hesitate a single minute. They can be considered like heroes because of their courage.
We can also add in this part, Rosa Parks. We studied in class a portrait of her. She was an activist for racial equalities. She hated the ways of her life. She had always dreamed of having freedom. In 1955, she sat on a white’s person seat on a bus in Montgomery. The bus driver told her to move to the back, but she refused to move and to give up her seat to a white man.The driver called the police and they arrested Rosa Parks but a boycott of the city buses ensued. She stood up for human rights. hanged the world and inspired others to change the world.
We can also talk about Georges Bwelle. For decades, he watched his father suffer, unable to get the medical attention he needed. Now a doctor, George Bwelle travels into the jungles of his native Cameroon nearly every weekend, providing free medical care for those who don't have access to good health care. So, he improves people’s living conditions. He is an average man, selfless and kind-hearted.
I think that Malala Yousafzai the Pakistani activist for female education is a heroine too. She was simply an 11 years student when she came to prominence. She wrote a diary for BBC Urdu, giving an account of how her school in Mingora town dealt with the Taliban’s 2009 edict to close girls’ schools. In October 2012 she was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman for « promoting secular education ». She recovered from the attack and was even more determined to continue her campaign which is now worldwide. In 2014 she became the youngest person ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Her love for education, and her courage in standing up to the Taliban made her an icon of bravery.
Finally, it is important to remember that anybody can be a hero in our daily life. But we can add that it exists fictional people created to be myths or heroes.
Indeed, there are heroes who are made up to stand for an ideology.
Wa saw in class that Captain America is seem as a hero since he fought against nazism and comunism. He is a fictionnal hero who appeared in many comis or movies. He has always carried the same values wich are honesty, justice, freedom and selflessness. He represents a powerful America. He’s always been ready to sacrifice himself for others. He embodies the perfect American citizen and the fact that anyone can be a hero.
We have seen a cartoon of Petar Pismetrovic which is named « Dreamland ». There are symbols of the USA and myths like Uncle Sam was supposedly based on a real person, Samuel Wilson, a businessman during the War of 1812. The image of Uncle Sam was used to encourage men to enlist in the military and to encourage civilian support for the entry of the U.S. into World War I. He represents a manifestation of patriotic emotion. Uncle Sam was officially adopted as a national symbol of the United States of America in 1950. On this picture, we can also notice Mickey Mouse who symbolizes the amusement parks and who describes the USA like a land of Entertainment.
To conclude, in my opinion, what we can answer is that to accomplish heroic acts, all we need is a willing mind and a willing heart. We all have a little part of heroism in ourselves, the difference is that some people use it and not the others. Moreover, when heroes live on, they can become myths and have a symbolic power.
