Bac/Myths and heroes
Message de lealdg posté le 15-05-2016 à 13:46:03 (S | E | F)
Bonjour,

I am going to talk about Myths and Heroes. At first, I would like to give you a definition of this notion :
A Myth can be defined as a story about gods and heroes, it can be a popular belief or a tradition or a false notion.
A Hero can be a mythological figure, a person who is admired for his or her archivement, a superhero or maybe a role model or an icon.
But these defitions are exhaustives and they can be seen differently.

Is the hero always a hero in the sense of the definition ?

At the beginning, to answer this question, I am going to talk about gloomy heroes : the first settlers to America.
The first settlers to Ameria, the Pilgrims, might be seen as hereos by present day Americans, for many reasons :
the trip oveseas was a difficult die.
They are the « ancestors » of modern Americans, or at least of the White-Anglo-Saxon-Protestants
They feld religious persecution in England.
They were following God's orders, to found his kingdom on Earth.

God's orders were very clear in the book of Genesis «  be productive and multiply » and that's what did : They lead the world in terms of politics (against the Japenese at Iwo Jima and against the Russians with the Race to Space), technology ( the steam skip, the rockets to the Moon, the Atomic Bomb), idealogy ( welcoming the immigrants, fulfilling God's will, democracy).
They are following their Manifest Destiny.

But if we know how these heroes conquered USA, they are not so pink. In fact, for the expansion they have killed a lot of people who lived on the territory, and they have drive out Natives.
A question may then arise : Where the notion of hero stop ? People who killed or drived out a commonalty, can they be considered as heroes ?

Then I would like to talk about heroes in series, maybe not heroes faithful to the definition.
In fact, if one follows the definition, the hero is an exemplary character, meant to edify the audience, to inspire them, and to behave as a role model. But if we linger to watch currents series, we can see that new hereos don't adhere absolutely to this definition. To illustrate that , I will used a exemple of fashion series : Game of thrones.
Game of thrones is an American fantasy drama television series followed and adored by
teenagers and adults from several continents. The series is set on the fictional continents and interweaves several plot lines. (The first narrative arc follows a civil war among several noble houses for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms; the second covers the attempts to reclaim the throne by the exiled last scion, Tyrion; the third chronicles the rising threat of the winter and the legendary creatures and fierce peoples of the North.)
In this series we could talk about many of these heroes , but I'll talk to you particularly of Tyrion. Tyrion is one of the main characters of this series. He is not the typical physical hero. In fact he is dwarf, and others, and even his own family, despises him because of it .
Tyrion explains as early as the first season that he tries to improve his intellectual side in order to compensate for his small height and the social contempt that it causes. He begins the series drunk and surrounded with prostitutes, and goes on this way for some time. So he did, again, not the attitude of the hero, he doesn't show the example. However the spectator appreciates that he doesn't assail the young Sansa who has been forced to marry him.
In the course of the episodes, Tyrion becomes the most charismatic of the series, the most charming, even the most attractive.
He becomes the hero of this series . Indeed despite its flaws or maybe thanks to its flaws, the viewer is attached and identifies advantage to this character.
So the hero isn't what it used to be, flawless, with a perfect attitude,...may be that today's society is tired of these perfect heroes and these new heroes are more representative of the people of our society, and therefore more attractive.

To conclude, to the question : is the hero always a hero in the sense of the definition ? I would like to answer that in the reality and the fiction the hero isn't always representative of the definition.
First, it depends on our point of view : the first settlers of America can be heroes for the americans but not for some descendants of native.
Then, even if with their faults they don't correspond to the requirements of the definition, heroes of the current series are more rep

Bonsoir,
- But these defitions are exhaustives: pas de "s" à un adjectif.
Où est l'annonce de plan?

- hereos (orthographe)by present day Americans
- the trip oveseas was a difficult die: ?
- that's what (sujet) did : They lead (passé)the world in terms of politics
- they are not so pink: traduction mot à mot.
- they have drive: mal construit.
- Where the notion of hero stop ?: mal construit.

- I will used (mal construit) a (A + CONSONNE)exemple of fashion series : Game of thrones.
-(The first narrative arc follows: temps?
- and others, and even his own family, despises (faute de conjugaison) him because of it .
- So he did (présent), again, not the attitude of the hero, he doesn't show the example.
- Indeed despite its (pas le bon possessif)flaws or maybe thanks to its flaws,
-identifies advantage( ? ) to this character.

- the americans: majuscule.
