Hello all of You! Hardworkers and future ones…
Here’s the 65th edition of your exercise! I couldn’t help making it a one, as usual, knowing that you’re working so much and so well! My collective suggestions will be online on Saturday, January 30th. I know that THE FORCE isn’t leaving you… and will be with you, all along, as ever!

I)Translate into English :
A) L'élection présidentielle est encore lointaine mais les hommes politiques pensent à bien se placer dans la course à l'investiture des différents partis et à organiser des Primaires comme cela se fait aux USA.
B) L’horloge de leur cuisine avance de 10 minutes. C'est fait exprès car son père a tellement peur d'être en retard qu'il l'a réglée ainsi pour avoir une marge de manoeuvre. Il préfère faire courir tout le monde, pour rien !
C) Si tu as envie d'aider, cherche près de chez toi : les initiatives locales et les diverses associations peuvent avoir besoin de ton enthousiasme et de deux bras pour les aider, ne serait-ce que quelques heures par semaine. Les bénévoles sont toujours bienvenus ...

Their kitchen clock is ten minutes fast. It’s on purpose because his father fears so much for being late that he has thereby adjusted it in order to have a leeway. He prefers to make everybody run, for nothing.

“Elle apprit beaucoup sur la musique pendant ces soirées libres de l’été. Chaque maison avait une radio. Toutes les fenêtres étaient ouvertes et elle entendait la musique.
Il y avait une maison spéciale qui avait tous les bons orchestres. La nuit elle allait à cette maison et se glissait dans la cour sombre pour écouter. Il y avait de beaux massifs autour de cette maison, et s’assoyait sous un buisson prés de la fenêtre. Et après que tout fut passé elle restait dans la cour sombre avec les mains dans les poches et réfléchissait longtemps. C’était la partie la plus importante de tout l’été – son écoute et son étude de cette musique à la radio.

I've just read a few paragraphs of "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter" and I've come across the typical colloquial American expression : "it was like she was" "he felt like he wasn't" etc... (instead of the correct form : "as if")

I)Translate into English :
A) The presidential election is still far away but politicians are thinking about positioning themselves for the different parties' nomination race and organizing primaries, as practiced in the USA.
B) Their kitchen clock is 10 minutes fast. This is on purpose because his father is so afraid of being late that he has set it like this in order to have a leeway. He'd rather make the others hurry up, for nothing!
C) If you are willing to help, seek it out near you : the local initiatives and the various associations may need your enthusiasm and your arms to help them, would it only be for a few hours per week. Volunteers are always welcome !

Par la suite, quant tout était terminé, elle se tenait t dans l’obscurité de la cour, les mains dans les poches et réfléchissait un long moment. C’était les moments les plus vrais de tout l’été : Son écoute à la radio de cette musique et l’étude de celle- ci.

" He felt like he wasn't ..." is not colloquial... It's standard American! You can hear it everywhere there and it's perfectly correct!
Don't write it in my exercises, please ... unless you want to make me suffer! We should get used to it ! but I can't!

The lure of doing a perfect exercise,
Is haunting me.
It doesn't mean I think it would be easy to achieve,
But being able to reach this goal,
Is a feat I'm still striving to realize.
Therefore, here's my try,

I)Translate into English :
A) L'élection présidentielle est encore lointaine mais les hommes politiques pensent à bien se placer dans la course à l'investiture des différents partis et à organiser des Primaires comme cela se fait aux USA.
The presidential election is still far off but politicians are already planning how to get well placed in the race for the nomination of the different parties and to organize primaries as is done in the US.

B) L’horloge de leur cuisine avance de 10 minutes. C'est fait exprès car son père a tellement peur d'être en retard qu'il l'a réglée ainsi pour avoir une marge de manoeuvre. Il préfère faire courir tout le monde, pour rien !
The clock in their kitchen is ten minutes early. It was done intentionally by their father who, being so haunted someone could get late somewhere, wanted to have a margin of time secured, which would avoid such eventuality. He prefers have everybody run, for nothing!
C) Si tu as envie d'aider, cherche près de chez toi : les initiatives locales et les diverses associations peuvent avoir besoin de ton enthousiasme et de deux bras pour les aider, ne serait-ce que quelques heures par semaine. Les bénévoles sont toujours bienvenus ...
If you want to help, look near you: local initiatives and the various associations may need your enthusiasm and arms to help, even just a few hours per week. Volunteers are always welcome.
II) Bonus :
1) Pourquoi garder ce cadeau qui ne te plaît pas ? Pourquoi ne pas l’échanger puisque tu peux le faire ?
Why keeping this gift if you don't like it? Why not trade it instead, as you can do it?

2) Elle regarde l’exercice et comprend qu'il sera difficile à faire, si elle le fait vraiment seule !
She is looking at the exercise and realizes it's difficult to do, if she will really do it by herself!

3) Que tu connaisses la bonne réponse ou pas m’importe peu ! Tu ne peux pas te taire, tu dois vraiment parler pour l’innocenter …
Whether you know the correct answer or not does matters little to me! You can’t keep silent. You must really speak up, in order to have him acquitted.

B)Their kitchen clock is ten minutes fast.It’s done deliberately because his father is so afraid of being late that he regulates it like that to have a room of manœuvre.He prefers make everybody run for nothing !

- are campaigning for/ thinking of being first in the race/trying to gain/

Il y avait une maison spéciale/spécifique (2) qui diffusait tous les bons orchestres. La nuit, elle allait près de cette maison et (3) se faufilait dans la cour sombre pour écouter. Il y avait de très beaux arbustes autour de cette maison et elle restait assise sous l’un d’entre eux, près de la fenêtre. Lorsque c’était terminé/ A la fin/ elle restait dans la cour sombre, les mains dans les poches (4) à réfléchir pendant longtemps. C’était la partie la plus authentique de tout l’été : écouter cette musique et l’étudier.

(1) Certains ont été gênés par « free ». Ce mot veut parfois dire « gratuit », mais ici, il signifiait simplement « libre ». En effet, Mick Kelly, l’héroïne, s’occupe de ses jeunes frères pendant les vacances d’été et est libre le soir, lorsque ses parents sont moins occupés.
(2) où l’on entendait/ qui captait/qui diffusait (les deux derniers font mieux comprendre que la musique vient d'une radio.)
(3) se faufilait/ se glissait
(4) « her hands in her pockets » ; en français, pas de possessifs … (bien qu'on l'entende de plus en plus, mais c'est un anglicisme!)
(5) « her listening » = un gérondif précédé d’un déterminant adjectif possessif. Son « écoute » et l’étude / étudier m’a semblé maladroit (et surtout trop calqué !). c'est pourquoi j'ai préféré garder le parallelisme de deux verbes (= transposition!)
