Exercice 55/Second breath
Message de here4u posté le 09-10-2015 à 11:39:27 (S | E | F)
Hello dear friends! addicts, hardworkers, regulars, newcomers and future participants! You know you're all welcome!

Sorry I made you wait, very unwillingly (at least consciously ) so long for one of your favourite 'leisure occupations'. Your mps have told me that you had realized I had a lot on my plate. I think my subconscious, knowing perfectly well that I needed a pause made me make that slip in dates! (- an example of parapraxis, the shrinks would say - ) This coming week will still be difficult, but I do hope it should be better afterwards. Fingers crossed!

I've noticed with great pleasure that many of you have taken advantage of this "pause" to work on lessons and tests and it's great! (Most of the time, You - and my students - are the triggers to these tests. I make them because I've noticed that some points don't seem to be very clear to you... they're 'made-to-order' or most often, 'made-to-need' )

Now, this test, and the following one are going to be again, forcing you to work a lot (as far as the vocabulary and the language register are concerned.) Don't forget the latter if you happen to be frustrated by the results of the former...

The collective correction will be online by the 20th of October and N° 56 should be out during the preceding weekend.
Once again, as ever, give me your best... You always do! and I for it!

I) Translate into English:
C. J'ai eu bien du mal à me faire comprendre ...

II) Translate into French:
« Ashenden entered the café of the hotel and saw Herbatus seated at a table facing the door. There was no escape. He must make the decision. [...]
"I'm tired, I can't think with any clearness."
"I must go in a minute."
"Then let's toss for it, shall we?
"Toss?"
"Yes," said Ashenden, taking the coin out of his pocket. "If it comes down heads tell your man to go ahead and if it comes down tails tell him to do nothing."
"Very well."
Somerset Maugham, Flip of the Coin.

Come on! Here's your new challenge ... Go for it!

Edit : vendredi 23h15 -
This will be a bonus:
1. When you don't sleep much, you're very exhausted... (progression parallèle)
2. The police officer will make them show their papers. (passive form?)
3. This lesson was important. It's a pity he didn't learn it. (I wish ...)
4. ...3 absences d'obligation portant sur la phrase : It's not necessary for her to pay for board and lodging.

Sorry! Brain scattered H4U

PS: My brains were so tired and scattered that I've created a compound adjective ...
Scatter brained H4U

C. J'ai eu bien du mal à me faire comprendre ... Tu veux bien m'aider ?
-> I had much trouble making myself understood... I don't know a single word in Romanian and barely speak Russian. Could you please help me?

-> He coud express himself effortlessly, and his alluring-killer?- smile opened all the doors for him.

->Don't hurt his feelings... Such a remark is humiliating, but at least try to tell him all you think about him.

« Trés bien !”

I took up the gauntlet,
and came to win the challenge,
carrying out your new ordeal,
with sweat and a bit of fear,
to be sent to the stake,
for my mistakes.

Thanks a lot and have a great weekend.

So long.
Yours friendly

Hello !
Here is the correction of N° 55 and 6 or 7 of you have already done 56 ...

Well, many of you said they had 'liked this exercise', but that it was very difficult...In fact, what amazes me is that all your productions are regularly better and better, although you insist on their increasing difficulty... and I sincerely congratulate you!
The more difficult you say the exercises are, the better productions you give me! Some exercises were really EXCELLENT and showed how hardworking and enthusiastic you are in this regular work...

I) Translate into English:

On a summer day, lying in wild grass, with a wide-brimmed hat protecting me from the scorching sunrays, a blade (of grass) between my teeth, I was watching cacti /succulents and other perennial plants which were thriving/flourishing/prospering above me, in the rock garden.

=> ‘On a summer day’ ou au moins ‘A summer day’.’
- herbes folles : ‘weeds’ ???
- une description s’introduit par ‘with’ en anglais ‘a man with a hat’, ‘a girl with blue eyes’…

He had got used to nipping at an old pencil and was facing his daily routine with total/utter confidence.

* - il avait pris = past perfect puisqu’il y a antériorité par rapport à l’action passée.
- prendre l'habitude de = to get used to + V + ing

C. J'ai eu bien du mal à me faire comprendre ... Tu veux bien m'aider ?

It was quite difficult for me to make myself understood… I can’t speak one single word of Romanian and hardly any/a little/a few sentences of/ Russian.

* - J’avais envie d’une infinitive complète ... à laquelle vous ne pensez pas souvent. Convenait aussi : I had quite a lot of trouble => MAIS attention aux ‘quantificateurs’ :
* Grande quantité = much + indénombrable singulier ;
- many + dénombrables pluriels ;
- a lot of = passe-partout (mais un peu familier) + indénombrable ;
- lots of = idem + dénombrables pluriel.

-ll fallait, quoiqu’il en soit, utiliser le passif : to make myself understood. (= to make myself to be understood)
- Je ne parle pas anglais = I can’t speak English. Je parle russe = I can speak Russian.

He could express himself assuredly, and his seductive smile was opening many doors to him.

- son sourire de séducteur : un séducteur = a seducer ; a womanizer, (familier)/ his ladykiller’s smile// alluring smile/ seductive moins sexuel … que womankiller/He had everyone wrapped around his little finger…

Don’t hurt his feelings! Such a remark is humiliating, but try to give him a piece of your mind, anyway.

* -hurt him = interprétation physique …
- lui dire ses quatre vérités = expression idiomatique française./tell him home truths/ a few holy truths/ speak your mind/ give him a piece of your mind.

It’s hardly worth mentioning, but I think he’s so touchy that he’s going to take it /the wrong way/ hard.

-valoir la peine de = to be worth + V + ing.

He was in such a rage that everyone could see that he was beyond himself and couldn’t remain cool and collected.

* Être hors de lui = to be beyond oneself ;
- Se maîtriser = overcome/control/master/ manage

II) Translate into French:

Ashenden entered the café of the hotel and saw Herbatus seated at a table facing the door. There was no escape. He must make the decision. [...]

"I'm tired, I can't think with any clearness."

"I must go in a minute."

"Then let's toss for it, shall we?
"Toss?"
Bon !

"Yes," said Ashenden, taking the coin out of his pocket. "If it comes down heads(3) tell your man to go ahead and if it comes down tails(3) tell him to do nothing."
"very well."

D’accord.

face = 'heads' ; pile = 'tails' => to toss a coin/ to flip a coin/

Somerset Maugham, Flip of the Coin.

Voilà ! It's all for now, folks! Have a good week and please, excuse any possible remaining typo...
