Places and forms of power
In politics and social science, power is the ability to influence the behavior of people. In order to live together members of a community accept rules, regulations, laws. This helps to create social cohesion but can also lead to conflicts and tensions. Even when authority seems absolute, there are always counter-powers which question it, aim at limiting its excesses and resist it. This of course leads to conflict between those who have power and those who don’t.
What forms the power takes in differents situations ?
If we look at the power of the media for example we can see how much it can influence the public opinion. The mass media plays an important role in forming our personality, enriching our knowledge, providing us with information of any kind. Ade Adepitan’s story illustrates this power. Despite his handicap, the watching of Olympics Game on tv gave him the strenght to fulfill his dream. He finally won the gold medal at the Paralympics Worl Cup. Power of medias is to share all the news in every countries and in this way open the mind of socities on other horizon.
In Ireland, the power of the mood took a major place in the struggle for independance. The love for the Nation was the main goal. On the one hand England had an officiel power over Ireland, on the other hand Ireland used a kind of illegal power to achieve independance. As a colony Ireland didn’t have any power. The nationalists decided to use the power of weapons to reach their purpose, the Independance of the country. In the movie « Michael Collins », we can imagine the power of the mood. Despide the disagreement all the country wished to regain its independance.
In a way, media’s power is similar to the power of a leader as Michael Collins. In Ireland, depanding on who you were the causes seems fair or not. In the media the journalists chose their viewpoint. It can be a viewpoint who can conceal a part of the reality and give you the feeling of an unfair situtation or the opposit.
