Bonjour,
The Idea of Progress is the theory that different advances in technology, science, and social organization can produce an improvement in the human condition. That is, people can become happier in terms of their quality of life (social progress) through economic development (modernization), and the application of science and technology (scientific progress).
Progress implies change and evolution and throughout history most advances have been perceived as positive. However the rhythm of progress seems to have accelerated over the last few decades and is causing some people to question this so called paradigm of progress. In the case of our document, this is the scientific point is what interests us, for example: medical advances, cures for illnesses, cloning, and performance enhancing drugs, genetically modified organism or designer baby.
PROBLEMATIQUE: What positive aspects can we obtain from these performances and what effect can they have on our society?
My 3 documents: My Sister's Keeper is a 2009 drama directed by Nick Cassavetes /about a young girl Anna Fitzgerald who seeks the aid of lawyer Campbell Alexander in trying to obtain medical emancipation from her mother Sara who wants Anna to donate her kidney to her sister. She tells the lawyer the story of her family after the discovery that her older sister Kate has been suffering from leukemia; how she was conceived by in vitro fertilization in order to become a donor; and the medical procedures she has been submitted to since she was five years old all with the purpose to donate to her sister. In my second document the movie deals with a future that draws ever & ever closer in where parents dictate the genetic makeup of their children. And my personal document “Savior sibling’' which is an article about the point of view of a “designer baby” .Baby Jamie was literally born to be a 'savior ' for his four-year-old brother Charlie, who has a life-threatening blood disorder, because his embryo was selected specifically as a perfect tissue match and in the article he spoke about the fact that he had not considered himself has a “product” who was created with the sole purpose of saving his brother’s life.
Definition: refers to a baby whose genetic makeup has been artificially selected by genetic engineering, combined with in vitro fertilization to ensure the presence or absence of particular genes or characteristics. = the characteristics are chosen by the parent’s.
