Consumerism/Bac
Message de juliettecaen posté le 04-05-2014 à 13:20:47 (S | E | F)
Bonjour,

Merci d'avance!

We tried to define the notion of consumerism and consumption. Consumption is the act of buying to satisfy our needs and desires and consumerism is overconsumption. Today, we live in a consumption society. So with all the publicity on the television or in the newspaper we have to consume almost every day. It has become a habit.
My problem is: To what extent do excesses of today’s consumer society lead to alternative ways of consuming?
I will first present the positive and negative aspects of consumerism and then the alternative ways of buying.

In fact there are certain positive effects, particularly for the economy. It is stimulated. There is more industrial production and many varieties of goods and services available. Employment opportunities and living conditions are also better. Nevertheless consumerism provokes a lot of side effects of different aspects. First for the economy, it increases individualism and affect local industries because their goods are more expensive than, the goods of big industries. There are also problems for the personal life. Indeed consumerism create tensions in the family because of the jealousy and envy and causes an over dependence on labour saving devices. For some people consumerism is now nearly a cult or a religion which influence our life. Finally, we must be careful about the environment. This phenomenon can increase ecological imbalances and depletion of natural resources. Consumerism also product a lot of wastes and especially E-waste, which are more and more numerous with all the electronic goods today but which are un-earth-friendly and very difficult to recycle.

However these effects of the consumerism aren’t a fatality and it exists some alternative ways of buying. We studied two alternatives. The first one is the fair trade. It’s another approach to conventional trading, which is pretty new, that aims to ensure that produces in poor countries get a fair deal and allows economic self-sufficiency. Some people are in favour of fair trade because thanks to this trade, people become ethical consumers and are sensitized to the labour in developing countries. But some others are against because it doesn’t change a lot the situation of the farmer. In addition, it just gives a clear conscience to rich consumers and destroys fuelling consumerism and conformity.

The second alternative is the bartering. It’s the exchange of one thing for another which is equivalent. This kind of trade is used for a very long time but like fair trade it has advantages and disadvantages. For example bartering is good for one nation but not for another because of the discrepancy between the values of some currencies. So it can be a solution on an individual level, in rural areas and can also simplify exchanges but it’s not possible to use bartering in today’s society, it’s no longer viable.

To conclude, I can say that even if the alternatives are not always possible, they must be developed because many scientists say that our way of life today is “not viable”. So the climate is changing and we can’t survive a long time like that. That’s why governments must take actions, reject consumerism and our entire way of life. But I think that it’s difficult for the population to accept this changing. Consumerism is so important in our life now.
