Merci d'avance à ceux qui prendront le temps de m'aider
In this sequence “Places and forms of power”, we focused our attention on the power of the media, especially television, over people’s life through one text.
The text is a press article entitled Getting Unplugged extract from Time written by Richard Stengel which presents the place of television in our daily life.
Among American children, television ranks second only to sleeping as a consumer of hours, meaning that by the age of 14 (fourteen), a devoted viewer will have witnessed 11.000 TV murders and will digest 350.000 commercials before graduating from high school, which is enormous. They spend most of their time watching TV. On average, an American child spends more than six hours daily watching TV. The risks for the children are to live in a virtual world, the more violence they watch, the more aggressive they are. Furthermore, a child has difficulty in making a difference between fiction and reality. TV can be blamed for making children aggressive. Added to that, instead of doing their homework, they spend their waking hours watching TV. TV can be reproached for preventing children from learning because the more they watch TV, the less they learn. Especially that today, there are fewer and fewer cultural programs.
Television even manages to break family ties, a recent study discovered that when four and five-year-olds are offered a hypothetical choice between giving up television or their father, one-third will decide not to make room for daddy. Nobody would expect a 5 year old child to prefer TV to his parents.
TV can be compared at a drug because many children are hooked on TV, they could no longer put up live without it. They can’t help turning on the TV set as soon as they come home from school.
Furthermore, not only are children addicted to TV, but their parents are hooked on TV too. Parents are as addicted to TV as their children but they don’t always realize how addicted they are. We could compared adults TV addicts with alcoholics or overweight people for instance.
Added to that Joan Anderson Wilkins, a researcher on family issues, conducted a week-long cold-turkey cure of TV with elementary children. Some family balked, which is a sign of the power of TV on the families. Some began and gave up but not because of children, in reality parents seemed to suffer the pangs of withdrawal more acutely than their children. It’s easier for the children to do without TV.
Michael Arlen, a TV critic, say that television connects viewers to nothing, in reality, TV give the assumption of being connected to something. Wilkins advice to disconnect the TV set to reconnect yourself to the world because TV, and the media in general, give only one part of the reality.
This article shows that TV is a modern form of power.
So, TV and new technologies are changing relations between people because the more hours they spend watching TV, the less they communicate. And when people talks, the media, who contribute to shaping opinions, are at the centre of the discussion but it’s normal because the news are watched by over 100 million Americans.
Nowadays, most American homes subscribe to cable TV and satellite TV. Digital TV is expanding too, so people are more and more hooked on TV. As far as I’m concerned, I don’t think that my family and me are TV addict, however we would have difficulty in living without the internet.
For TV addict, I think that TV is a loophole, they aren’t satisfied with their life so they connect to a virtual world which is a way to escape for them.
And TV isn’t the only media who could get addicted, for instance many teenagers are hooked on their mobile phones or on the internet. News technologies have made communication easier but I don’t think that it’s really that the communication.

Bonsoir,
The new technologies have made communication easier, but I do not think that being on the phone all the time is necessarily communication.
