Thanksgiving/oral
Message de america posté le 04-12-2013 à 19:32:54 (S | E | F)
Bonjour,

Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday of November in USA and on the second Monday of October in Canada. It became official in eighteen sixty-three when the President Abraham Lincoln appointed it. The history began on september the sixth sixteen twenty, when the Pilgrims were fleeing religious persecution in their native England. So they decided to travel to the New World to board a ship called the Mayflower. They left from Plymouth in England. They were one hundred and ten passengers in the ship. The trip was cold and damp. Since there was the danger of fire on the wooden ship, the food had to be eaten cold. Many passengers became sick and one person died but someone gave birth to a child. They finally arrive on November the tenth (1620) in Plymouth wich had been named by Captain John Smith in sixteen fourteen. They decided to settle there because it offered an excellent harbor. The first winter was devastating for the Pilgrims. The cold and the snow were exceptionally heavy, interfering with the workers as they tried to construct their settlement. Of the one hundred and ten who left England, fifty survived the first winter. On March sixteen, sixteen twenty-one an Indian brave walked into the Plymouth settlement. The Pilgrims were frightened until the Indian called out “Welcome” in English. His name was Samoset. He had learned English from the captains of fishing boats. A few days later, he came back with another Indian called Squanto who spoke better English. Squanto taught the Pilgrims wich plants were poisonous and wich had medicinal powers. He taught them to plant Indian corn and other crops. Without this help, the Pilgrims wouldn’t have survived. The harvest in October was successful. There were corn, fruit and vegetables, fish and meat. Yhe Pilgrims wanted to say “thank you” to the Natives for their great help. So the Pilgrims Governor proclaimed a day of Thanksgiving to be shared by all the colonists and the Natives.
Today, the Americans families get together and have a big meal. They eat turkeys, vegetables like corn, mashed potatoes (Yams); pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce. Like the Pilgrims, they give thanks for being alive and being together with the people they love.
