Comment expliquer cette phrase s'il vous plaît?
"Of all scientific institutions botanic gardens have the longest history."
Est-ce que "of" dans ce cas a le sens de "according to"?

Of all scientific institutions botanic gardens have the longest history.
Of all = compared to all
Perhaps if you rephrase the sentence this way, it will make more sense: Botanical gardens have the longest history compared to all other scientific institutions.

Hello, one could also paraphrase this 'of' as 'among'. It is the same 'of' as in 'one of them', or a 'piece of cake'; it's the partitive of, used for one part of a whole, one element of a set. Cheers, S

Unless I am wrong,
"Of all scientific institutions botanic gardens have the longest history" and
"Botanic gardens have the longest history of all scientific institutions" have the same meaning.
so, of all may convey one part of a whole as Simplicius said
