Hello everybody! =)
I have chosen to talk about the dating sites business. I know it's not a very common topic but I have found it very interesting because there is major lucrative business behind this phenomenon, little-known by people in general.
We have to know that today, technology has provided new ways to communicate, to meet each other even to find true love using the Internet. This is called online dating. As I have just said before, there is a significant business behind the dating sites with communication and marketing strategies, advertising and a huge turnover. As a result, online dating has increased rapidly in recent years.
So first of all, I am going to briefly present the history of dating sites before talking about the core of my presentation, namely the online dating market in Europe and USA.
In the early days of the Internet, before the first dating sites, people began to connect with another through online message boards and chat rooms. One of the advantage/appeal of this type of communication was that it was instant, and it allowed users to talk anonymously with one another. They were a kind of forerunner. To a certain extent, we can state that early chat rooms and message boards paved the way for dating sites. Match.com is said to be the first dating site, launched in 1995. It gave users compatibility questionnaires, then used to match them with other users. This compatibility concept was adopted by other early sites, such as LavaLife (launched in 1997) and eHarmony (launched in 2000).
There are around 400M Europeans and among these people, about 88.5 million people between the ages of 18 and 65 years old considered themselves, as “single” this year. Nevertheless, it is difficult to define the term “single” for example, does a 78-year-old woman living alone count as a “single”?. The current largest amount of singles among its population is the UK. A good 64.1 million of these singles regularly surf the Internet and are the main target audience of the online dating industry. The online dating boom in Europe started in 2000. At that time, a little more than 1,000,000 people were online. Currently, around 32.1 million Europeans log on to dating sites each month.
Overall, there are 5,000 online dating websites in Europe. In a few countries like Germany or the UK, there is a wide range of companies and offer a rich variety, contrary to south Europe for instance. Across Europe, about 175 companies have succeeded in getting more than 100,000 members over the years.
Basically, online dating service companies can be separated into three categories:
Online personals, where the users do their own searching
Matchmaking agencies, using personality tests
There are also many different specialized types of dating sites that offer online matches based on ethnicity, e.g : JDate (for Jewish singles), Black Christian People Meet, Amigos (for Latino singles), Asian People Meet, and Shaadi (for Indian singles), while others focus on careers, age, sexual orientation, relationship goals or common interests.
The three most dominant players in Europe are:
Meetic : A French flirt site with secondary brands like Match.com and the Online match maker MeeticAffinity -the clear market leader in terms of turnover (founded in 2003). Indeed, Meetic has succeeded as the only European provider to achieve more than 100 million Euros (178M€) in 2011, which corresponds to a market share of just 21.9%. Another 14 companies follow with sales of between 10 and 50 million Euros.
Badoo : An American flirt site in the style of Facebook - the clear market leader in terms of monthly users (founded in 2006)
Edarling : Online match maker in Germany (founded in 2009)

[Suite] :
Overall, Europeans spent approximately 811M € on online dating in 2011. For
2012, there was once again an increase of around 10%. 85% of this turnover is generated from membership fees. Indeed, there are two basic types of dating sites : free and paid. Free dating sites have obvious appeal, but they are not always monitored/controlled and do not always screen applicants or guarantee reliability of any information. Paid dating sites often offer trial periods called “premium memberships”, and they usually provide secure access for their users. We can notice that the dating sites access is often paying for men, in order to regulate the subscriptions because there are too numerous. The top three European online dating markets with the highest turnover are the UK (211M€), Germany (203M €) and France (122M €).
Advertising revenues play a secondary role. Besides, we can take the example of the French dating site called “adopteunmec.com” (launched in 2008), whose concept is very original : the website works as a big supermarket, a shop where women can go on shopping and choose any man they want, they got an absolute power. There is a tremendous advertising strategy and communication campaign behind this concept. Indeed, in order to attract more user, the website decided to open a real store, with men, in box, in Paris, so women can go on shopping for real!
Since the start of the new millennium the online dating industry grew rapidly from year to year in the USA. Today, the annual revenue from the online dating industry is about $1.049 Billion. We have to know that, currently, there are roughly 54 million single people in the US and 40 million of them have already tried dating sites. The Average spent by dating site customer per year is $239. If we take the example of the total Match.com members, we have 15M members and and 20M for eHarmony.
To conclude, we can assert that the dating sites spread has led to the beginning of a great business, very profitable. Since people became more comfortable with the Internet as a means of communication and self-expression, the online dating trend should continue to grow. Therefore the “love industry” and dating markets keep expanding year after year.
Merci de votre intérêt.

Hello,
