Are gerund words always ending with ing?
I have knee replacement surgery. <---Can this sentence be gerund?
I have knee replacing surgery. <---Is this sentence correct gerund?

Examples of the use of gerund:

Hello,
Your example is not perfect because people wouldn't express that idea in that way; they would say:
replacing a knee is a serious event
and they use the word 'replacement'

Sorry to disagree with you dsmith, but 'I am having knee replacement surgery' is not a gerund.It is a present continuous tense.
A gerund ends with -ing but is a subject or a complement;it does not mean that the action is in progress.
I am having knee replacement surgery = present continuous
Having knee replacement surgery is a major operation = gerund
