Books suggestions

Hello,
I'm pretty new here, trying to get my English up-to-date, that is rather difficult since I never practise. I'm revising my grammar, let's say 1 hour per day and in the evenings I read. I had much fun with Mary Higgins Clark (Night-Time is my Time), spent my week holiday on Twilight (I was surprised a 40 years old mom could like it...) and right now, I'm in M. Connelly's Lincoln Lawyer. Less pleasure with the last one but still ok. Could you suggest me some books, I enjoy criminal stories, novels, history (I think I'm not good enough though for the last one), well plenty of subjects interest me, the style is(more) important for me.
Regarding films, I have just started watching The Shield; if I watch an episode once with the subtitles and let's say 2 days later without the subtitles, would that help ?
I wish you all a lovely summer (less fresh and rainy than the month of July !!!)
