Hello,
I'd like to translate in English : "J'ai pris un coup de vieux quand mon fiston est rentré au collège".
Here is my translation : "I felt suddenly really old when my son entered the big school".
But the French sentence is colloquial and my translation seems to be more formal.
So, what else could I say ?

Hello , comme il est bon de comparer les genres ... je suggèrerais
--- I suddenly felt much older the day (when) my boy went to the secondary school .

Hello!
J'ai pris un coup de vieux quand mon fiston est rentré au collège.
First, for the second half of the sentence -- what you call "un collège" is for us a "middle school" (a "lycée" is a high school.)
Now, for the beginning of the sentence, I have a couple of ideas (how we would say it here):
I felt really old when...
It made me feel really old when...
So... putting the two thoughts together:
>> Wow, I felt really old when my kid started middle school! (The "wow" really adds stress to how old you felt!)
>> Wow, It made me feel really old when my kid started middle school!
Now, tell me, if you feel old when your child is starting middle school, should I feel ancient, now that mine are going to a university???

What about me at almost 66? One foot in the grave? I am joking because I have heard a lot of parents say the same!

Merci à tous et toutes pour vos suggestions !
No Jonquille, you shouldn't feel ancient even if your children are going to university
It's crazy how time flies !

Hello silky!
“One foot in the grave?” You? At only almost 66? What can I say at almost 87? I have one foot in the grave, sure, but the other is firmly sunk in the grass .. very deep!
Have a good night!

Hello,
"Wow, I felt really old when my son entered middle school" is a good translation.
Je crois qu'une meilleure proposition est...
"When my son started middle school the realization that I was now an old man hit me like a ton of bricks."
This way, you retain the colloquial nature of the French saying instead of a dry word for word translation.
Just a suggestion.
