Give in et give up

Bonjour,
Après avoir lu le post de NP à Ariane, sur le forum "here lies Lily Waters", je ne vois pas bien la différence entre to give in et to give up ?
tous deux semblent signifier abandonner.
give in :
(yield) céder (to à);
(stop trying) abandonner;
I ~ in—tell me! je donne ma langue au chat (familiar) —dis-le moi!
give up:
~ up abandonner;
don't ~ up! tiens bon!;
to ~ up on laisser tomber (diet, crossword, pupil, patient);
ne plus compter sur (friend, partner);
~ up [sth], ~ [sth] up
(renounce or sacrifice) renoncer à (vice, habit, title, claim);
sacrifier (free time);
quitter (job);
to ~ up smoking/drinking cesser de fumer/de boire
Quand emploie t-on l'un plutôt que l'autre?

pour moi, de tête, to give in, c'est céder pour un pont sous le poids de la neige,ne pas être assez fort pour résister, et to give up, c'est laisser tomber, abandonner.
Pour la langue au chat, j'aurais plutôt dit: I give up"

Mais, dans ce cas, NP aurait dû employer" give up" et non "give in" pour dire abandonner la recherche de certains mots?
peut-être le 2è est-il davantage employé aux USA ?

non, pas forcément, to give in au sens de céder, ne pas être assez fort, plier devant une difficulté, alors que to give up, c'est laisser tomber par lassitude, par dépit.

oui, c'était au moins du deuxième degré, au départ, j'avais mis "daft" mais j'ai pris peur et j'ai mis "stubborn" au sens d'entêté, d'opiniâtre, qui se rapproche plus d'une qualité !!

Give in signifie capituler. C'est ce que NP a voulu exprimer.
You've given in too easily.
Give in signifie aussi rendre/remettre une copie.Don't forget to give in your essays by the end of next week.

à tous les trois !!! si je ne comprends pas, ce ne sera pas de votre faute!!Gérondif, tu as bien fait de suivre ta galanterie naturelle, et de remplacer "daft" par "stubborn", car,comme tu le dis, l'entêtement peut être une qualité
alors que la bêtise restera a " foolish thing ".
Taconnet et Lucile, me voilà "parée pour l'hiver" avec vos explications on ne peut plus claires et fournies...

I guess what I should have said is that ariane had "thrown in the towel" too soon.

I could have said "give up", but that has more of a sense of finality to my mind. I was hoping ariane would try again. In other words, that she could give in but not give up.

Non, NP, je n'aurais pas insisté ! Quand je ne comprends pas ce qu'une personne me dit
, je lui demande de bien vouloir répéter, mais si de son côté elle ne fait aucun effort pour être plus compréhensible, believe me, I give in, I give up, as you like !... ... oui, je laisse tomber !, je ne vais quand même pas en faire une maladie !

(N.B. Don't worry ! It isn't true. I really stopped smoking in 2004, and for good !)
