Bonjour,
Merci beaucoup
Even though he has adapted well to life in England, it will never take the place of his true country, because Poland is his real home. Clinging to the things that remind him of his old country also allows him to keep his identity, to remember who he really is and to not forget his origins. Borsht and Pierogi are actually typical polish dishes which help Poppy to be in a second childhood he probably hadn’t had because of World War II, and its consequences, especially the escape of its family and he from Poland: when he was a child, he might be very happy. His parents may cook these dishes, and he may use to be in company of buxom waitresses. Thanks to this café, he is almost back in his country.
Nevertheless, although he is an immigrant, he is prejudiced against the colored newcomers, who probably come from another country. His attitude is completely antithetic, given the fact that he and its parents had lived the same situation! This could be explained by the effects of the Second World War in the polish mentality. Poppy never talked about that, but he surely has been chocked. Indeed, the poles had seen a lot of horrors: the rise and the domination of the Nazism, the open of the concentration camps, and later, the USSR’s lead during the cold war. Poland has always been dominated by other powerful countries, and maybe Poppy doesn’t want to have to be confronted with foreigners. In this case, it’s certainly a kind of xenophobia. Besides, he forces his daughter to stay away from these people, as if they were sick and contagious, which confirm this theory. Also, his area must be inhabited by other Poles, and the arrival of foreigners could scare him.
All these things might explain why clung to the things that reminded his old country.
