Bonjour,
Merci.
Heating in 1843 (in Victorian London, in Dickens's time)
Nowadays in England there is central heating in the houses and the flats, but it didn't exist in 1843.
In time of Dickens the heating was done by fire of coal or coke in a fire-place.
The fuel used for cooking food and warming the dwellings was usually coat or coke; sometimes wood or peat was employed, and occasionally coal gas.
When the fuel is burning, it products heat and also carbonic acid gas. It formed smoke with unburned carbon : it mades black the town and the houses.
The carbonic acid gas was poisonous in the rooms, when there was no chimney in stoves.
Heating was necessary but not as good as today; more than nine-tenths (9/10) of the heat of a common grate passes up the chimney and is wasted.

Coucou denassv !

Best regards
