Present Perfect Tense?
Message from henrychan posted on 07-10-2010 at 04:36:29 (D | E | F)
Hello,
I have just done this question :

14. I didn't want a bath, thanks. I _____ HAD (just / have) a shower.

My answer is (had just had), but the machine says that it's wrong, the answer is (have just had).

I have a question about it! In the first sentence, it uses (didn't) which is the past tense. In this case, we should use the past participle tense in the following sentence to follow the meaning of that "I don't want to take a bath because I have just had a shower" It is correct or not? Hope someone can help me.

Thank you.

This question is in the test of the Past simple or Present perfect (English exercise n°66482 - Please quote this number when contacting us)

Hello!

I agree that this is an error in the test. The answer should be past perfect "I had just had a shower". The sentence would also be more natural if it was phrased:

I didn't want to take a bath because I had just had a shower.
I don't want to take a bath because I have just had a shower.

You could also say:

I didn't want to take a bath because I had just taken a shower.
I don't want to take a bath because I have just taken a shower.

A moderator will get this corrected as soon as possible.

Hello henrychan,

Really, 8 years old? Bravo

Here, let me add some grammatical points for you:

You said I have just done this question

Normally, we say I just answered to this question or I just did this test.

You said In this case, we should use the past participle tense...

We all know there is no such tense as Past participle. I think you mentioned the past perfect tense, didn't you?

Good night,

Hello!

A slight correction May: I just answered to this question

Other possible phrases:

I have just completed this test.
I have just finished this test.

Goodnight!

Hello notrepere,

It's a typo, notrepere (Can I say that? )

P.S. Just kidding! It's my mistake

Then good night with a comma, not with an exclamation.
