Des erreurs à bannir - exercice
Message de taconnet posté le 18-09-2010 à 11:42:58 (S | E | F)
Bonjour.

Niveau :
Correction : samedi 25 septembre 2010.

Hello Taconnet,

Quelques erreurs ont trompé votre vigilance:

Never have I seen such an exciting film, participe présent, excited, participe passé, ne va pas.

Dans votre exercice, : in spite of the bad weather, ok : in spite of , préposition + nom ou gérondif, mais on ne peut pas dire : in spite of the weather was bad, in spite of ne marche pas comme conjonction.

D'habitude, je mets un s à maths, math est donné en double clic comme colloquial et American, notrepère va sans doute réagir très vite !

On pourrait aussi accepter: I found that the number of universities that accept foreign students has increased (valeur de bilan sans durée)

a holy day is une journée sainte, I am on holiday: je suis en vacances, chez nous, c'est plus l'idée de la chaise vide les vacances parlementaires, la vacance d'un poste...

We arrived home est un peu problématique parce que arrive est un verbe d'état et pas de mouvement, donc suivi de at et pas de to: I arrived at school, at work, et donc pourquoi pas at home.

avec un verbe de mouvement, on met to: I went to school, to work, to bed.
le to disparait devant home en déplacement: I reached home, I got home, I went home, et par extension I arrived home mais ce dernier exemple pour moi est gênant, arrive indiquant un résultat et pas un déplacement, mais là je coupe un peu les cheveux en quatre !

Merci pour cet exercice en tous cas, c'est amusant de voir un problème en provoquer un autre.

Phrase 7 suite.

Faire + infinitif.
On utilise la structure :
« Make + objet + infinitif sans to

They made me come too early.

Phrase 8
Attention à la traduction de "chez"

1- He is living by his uncle on the country.
2- He is staying at his uncle's in the country.
3- On peut aussi écrire :

He is living WITH his uncle in the country.(En permanence)
He is staying(for a while) with his uncle in the country.

Je vais chez mon frère.
I am going to my brother's.

Chez qui séjourne-t-il ?
Whose house is he staying at?

Phrase 15

Work est nom indénombrable (uncountable noun)

Lorsque l'on construit une phrase exclamative avec WHAT il faut savoir si le nom que l'on emploie est dénombrable ou indénombrable.

Avec un nom singulier dénombrable on met l'article indéfini "a"
Avec un indénombrable on ne met pas d'article.

What a pretty garden your neighbour has !
What contempt he showed ! (contempt (uncountable) = mépris)

Dans un dictionnaire anglais les noms indénombrables sont signalés par [U]

Hello!

Here I am Gerondif...

In American English, we either say mathematics (or arithmetic) or math but never maths. In fact, when I saw that word at the top of this website, I thought "What language is Maths?" Is that spoken by the people on the Island of Math? That's how foreign it was to me. (This is much like the word "sports" which is often used in the singular throughout Europe/UK, but usually plural in the U.S. We would say: I like sports as opposed to I like sport.)

I have never heard the word "latterly" in my entire life (although we use the word "latter"). I had to look it up to be sure it was a real English word. The Merriam-Websters dictionary says its chiefly British formal. We substitute the word "later" instead.

Many of these questions can be found on another website: Lien Internet

Hello Mr. T!

Thanks for the correction. However.....

Math is American
Maths in English (because Notrepère) we say mathematics

Phrase 8: You have to be French to interpret "by" as "living with". I saw it as being close by i.e. near.

Phrase 10. The English rarely "take a trip". The just "go" or "go on a trip".
Americans take a trip. Example: "Take a walk on the wild side.."

Phrase 13. latterly. Aw gee Mr T. Come on! Too literary and not at all in
every day English language.

And why put extra exercises into your correction? It was good enough as it was!

Regards
Intrepid
