Compréhension d'une phrase

Hello,
Once again, I have a little problem with a sentence:
PELÉ is the best soccer player to ever play the game. He is also known as 'a legend'.
I understand that he is still known as a legend (OK for present). But in the first sentence, though I suppose it means "Pelé est le meilleur joueur que le football ait jamais connu", I would translate it literally by "Pelé est le meilleur joueur de football que nous connaissions" (comme s'il jouait toujours), which cannot be true !
Would anyone be so kind as to make me understand this sentence structure ? Thank you in advance in case you have enough time.

Your sentence sounds bizarre.
One would expect something like:
Pelé is the best soccer player (that) I have ever seen.
Pelé is the best soccer player Brazil has ever had.
To my ears, your sentence sounds like a biography written or spoken in the present tense to make it more alive (une espèce de présent de narration en quelque sorte. cf Bossuet: "Madame se meurt, Madame est morte" ... souvenirs de lycée...)
Otherwise I would have written:
Pelé was the best soccer player to ever play the game.
"Pelé is the best soccer player ever." would make sense.

Cette phrase est la première de l'exercice 49575.
Ce qui ne sonne pas bien pour moi, c'est "to ever play" ; j'aurais dit "to have ever played".

>voilà les meilleures phrases. Il serait inutile de les analyser logiquement, par exemple, Pele est le meilleur joueur : ça veut dire qu'il est toujours joueur de foot ? On pourrait également considérer : Shakespeare is the greatest Englishman of all time ou bien Shakespeare was the greatest Englishman of all time. Toutes les deux phrases sont d'usage courant. On aurait tort de rejeter l'une en faveur de l'autre.

I am sorry for not having mentioned where it came from. You are right gerondif, it "sounds" bizarre. And now that I have seen the initial sentence notrepere knew : Pelé is known as a legend and the best soccer player to ever play the game, I understand it. I do not totally agree with you, robm447, especially in this case. If you advised me not to translate a sentence made like this "I want you to", I can understand, its useless. But here we have a sentence which has been modified and the meaning is not as "limpide" as it was in the sentence of the biography.
I feel a bit less lonely !
