En effet, les deux mots sont parfaitement traduits. Je pense que l'appartement restait mystérieux, le narrateur voyait la lumière de loin, et cela lui apparaissait comme une lumière féerique. A mon avis...

I think the origin of this expression is "fairy lights" which are small, dimly lit Christmas lights. Lien Internet
The sense that I get is that the light is dim, or soft.
