Correction/symbol of liberty

Hello everybody .

Je voudrais que quelqu'un me dise si cette phrase est juste :

I chose this subject because I think the democracy is the symbole of liberty and they are very important to fight for this symbole.

Bonsoir,

I chose(or "I've chosen") this subject because I think the democracy is the symbole of liberty and they are("il est"...) very important to fight for this symbole(j'avoue que quand c'est possible, moi, j'évite les répétitions..).

pour éviter la répétition du mot "symbol", on peut utiliser:
icon;emblem;representation;token...!
