Bonjour.

Voici le second volet de cette histoire.

Niveau :

Correction : mercredi 21 novembre 2007

Bonsoir Marie11

On the contrary , Mrs Brittle was thinking that she had to become more tolerant . Years passing by ,Wilson had become more flinty ,
as at in the mean time Miss Brittle was understanding better and better Arthur 's decision .Wilson had even said that he didn't ever want to hear about his cadet , blaming him about the death of their old mother , dying just seven days after Arthur 's departure . As their departed mother would have probably done in other occasions , Miss Brittle tried to convince Wilson that this departure had never shortened the life of Mrs Loveheart . One day , wilson restived had even dared to say to his elder sister
( Stop talking this way , we could tell it's our mother " talking " )
In the mean time , he did find that his young brother had not made the most of his life and that he would have been more happy
getting married with their cousin Emma .

Thank you

Bonjour Marie11,

Years passed by, Wilson had become more intransigent, whereas Miss Brittle understood better and better Arthur's decision. Wilson had even said he no more wanted to hear about his younger, accusing him of the death of their old mother, hardly died seven days after Arthur’s left.
As probably their late mother would have done on others occasion, Miss Brittle tried to persuade Wilson that this departure hadn’t in the least put an hand on Mrs Loveheart’s life. One day, Wilson exasperated as he was even dare say to his elder sister : “ Stop speaking like this, it looks like our missed mother !”
Moreover he found his younger brother hadn’t enough taken advantage of life and he would have been happier if he had married with their cousin Emma.

Hello Marie11 !!!

Thank you so much for this exciting exercice, I did my best, but really looking forward to your corrections !

here it is :

"In contrast to him, Miss Brittle used to think she had to be all the more understanding. Over the years, Wilson had become more uncompromising, when Miss Brittle was understanding Arthur's decision better and better.

Wilson had even said he would not hear from his youngest brother anymore, accusing him of their old mother's death, passed away barely seven days after his leaving.

As the deceased mother would have most probably done in other circmstances, Miss Brittle tried to convince Wilson that the depart did not shorten Mrs Loveheart's life at all.

One day, exasperated, Wilson even dared say to his eldest sister : "Stop speaking so, you sound like our poor mother !"

In other respects, he used to think that his little brother did not enjoy his life enough and that he would have been much happier if he had marry their cousin Emma."

Thank you for this following part,

On the contrary,Miss Brittle thought she'd better be more open-minded. With time passing,Wilson had become more inflexible, whereas Miss Brittle could understand Arthur's choice better and better. Wilson had even told her that he would not hear of his younger brother anymore, blaming him for the death of their old mother who had actually died within seven days after Arthur's leaving (for good).
As their late mother would have most probably done in other circumstances,Miss Brittle tried to convince Wilson THAT departure had certainly nothing to do with the shortening of Mrs Loveheart's life. One day,Wilson, fed up with all that fuss , had even dared utter to his eldest sister: -"Stop talking nonsense, you just sound like Poor Mother, you know!" Moreover,he thought his young brother had not had enough benefit of life and would have been so much happier if he had married their (girl)cousin Emma.

Looking forward to the "last" episode.

Hello Marie,

On the contrary, Miss Brittle thought she had to be all the more tolerant. By the years, Wilson had become more uncompromising, while Miss Brittle was understanding better and better the decision of Arthur. Wilson even said he did not want hearing something about his younger brother, accusing him for the death of their old mother, died only seven days after Arthur's leaving. As very certainly their died mother would do in other situations, Miss Brittle tried to convince Wilson that leaving had not shortened the life of Mrs Loveheart at all. One day, Wilson, irritated, has dared to say at her elder sister : "Stop talking like that, it seems our poor mother". Otherwise, he found that his young brother did not profit from the life and he would be much happier if he was married with their cousin Emma.

Bonjour Marie11,
On the contrary, Miss Brittle thought she had all the more reason to be tolerant. Getting older, Wilson had become more inflexible meanwhile Miss Brittle was understanding the Arthur's decision better and better. Wilson had even said he didn’t want to hear about his younger brother anymore, blaming him for the death of their old mother who had passed away only seven days after he went.
Very certainly, as their late mother would have done in similar circumstances, Miss Brittle tried to convince Wilson that his leaving hadn’t actually shortened Mrs Loveheart’s life.
One day Wilson was overexcited and dared to tell his eldest sister :”Stop saying that, it sounds like our late mother”.
What is more, he was thinking that his younger brother hadn’t enjoyed enough his life and he would have been much happier if he had married his cousin Emma.

beaucoup.

Merci.

Bonjour.

Quelques remarques préliminaires:

I- All the more ...(..as)

Le comparatif est précédé de l'adverbe "the"; la seconde proposition, qui exprime une cause, peut être introduite par AS - SINCE - ou - BECAUSE

«He felt the more /all the more depressed as all friends were away.

II- Within ...(..of)

« He died within a month of his wife's death.»

III-
Late :
Her late husband/the late president ... used only before a noun of a person no longer alive.

IV-
To make the most of sth : To take full advantage of something because it may not last long.
It's a lovely day - We must make the most of it.
make the most of ──► profiter de.
On peut aussi employer:
to profit from /to benefit from
« I profited enormously from working with her.»
« I feel that I have benefited greatly from her help.»

V- To think
1- to think = réfléchir à, songer à
« What are you thinking of ?
« I think he's wrong.»

VI- To dare

« I wonder how he dared to say such a thing .»

« He dared me to dive from the pier.»
Il m'a mis au défi de plonger du haut de la jetée.

Voici ma proposition.

On the contrary, Miss Brittle thought she'd to be all the more tolerant. With the years, Wilson had become more uncompromising, whereas Miss Brittle understood Arthur's decision better and better. Wilson had even said that he did not want to hear about his younger brother any more, and accused him of the death of their old mother who had died within seven days after Arthur's departure.
As their late mother would most likely have done on other occasions, Miss Brittle tried to convince Wilson that, that departure had in no way shortened Mrs Loveheart's life. One day, Wilson, irritated, had even dared to say to his elder sister: « Stop talking like that, you sound like our poor mother !» Besides, he found that his younger brother had not taken advantage enough of life and that he would have been much happier if he had married their cousin Emma.

"whereas Miss Brittle understood Arthur's decision better and better"

pourquoi "understood", quand "better and better" indiquent une durée, me semble-t-il en tout cas ?

Merci d'avance pour votre réponse, et brava ancora per i problemi messi su questo forum !

Bonjour Johannes.

Enfin !!!....

They played tennis yesterday morning (aspect pontuel)
They were playing tennis when it started raining (aspect progressif)

Lien Internet

le verbe "understand" en fait partie.

On écrira:
« He is getting better and better »

On ne pourra pas écrire :
« Miss Brittle was understanding better and better ......»

On écrira donc :
« Miss Brittle understood better and better......»

Thank you, Marie !!

J'ai d'autres questions alors, si vous me permettez...

et voici...

"Wilson, irritated, had even dared to say to his elder sister"

dernière toute petite question : "on other occasions" ; j'ai pour ma part tendance à dire "in other occasions", erreur ?

merci encore !

Bonjour Johannes.

Question(1) :

"Wilson, irritated, had even dared to say to his elder sister"

My elder sister.

Question(2)

Dernière toute petite question : "on other occasions" ; j'ai pour ma part tendance à dire "in other occasions", erreur ?

I seem remember that on that occasion he was with his wife.

I have a suit but I only wear it on special occasion.

Notez les expressions:
1-On occasion = sometimes but not often
« I have on occasion visited her at home.»

2- On the occasion of = at the time of an important event
« On the occasion of her 50th birthday.

Merci beaucoup Marie !

Have a nice evening !

Johannes
