1)What do you want this book for?
I want this book to give it to my mother. (but)
Pourquoi veux-tu ce livre?
Je veux ce livre pour l'offrir à ma mère.
2)I don't know what for, but it is necessary (what for:adverbe)
Je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais il le faut.
3)Why was he punished?(adverbe)
He was punished by her mother for stealing Peter's byke.
4)I wonder the reason why did he come so late yesterday .(why:pronom relatif,reason:antécédent)
Je me demande pourquoi il est venu si tard hier.
5)Do you know the reason why he turned down this new job? (why: pronom relatif,la cause)
6)Peter asks Mary: "What are you leaving next Sunday from France rather than Belgium to England for?".
Mary answers Peter: "Because before going back in England, I must meet an old aunt".

Pourquoi Dans quel but veux-tu ce livre? Tu veux ce livre pour en faire quoi ?

Why signifie pourquoi, pour quelle raison et a because pour réponse alors que what for, dans quel but, pour quoi en deux mots, à comme réponse pour, to + base verbale.
I am coming to kill you because I was paid to do it. Je viens pour vous tuer parce qu'on m'a payé pour le faire.
Why are you coming to kill me ? Because I was paid to do it. La cause précède l'action.
What are you coming here for ? to kill you. Le but suit l'action.
