Un très beau texte en anglais, facile à comprendre, mais combien difficile à rendre dans un français équivalent. Ted se met à rêver, il faut donc que ses pensées soient aussi fluides et légères que possible. Merci Here 4u, j'adore !
J'espère ne pas avoir trop déformé par ma traduction, l'idée de l'auteur.

(1*) mijoter, cuire à petits feux, tout doucement (littéralement) : je traduis cette idée de lenteur pour obtenir un plat confit, en fructification de la somme déposée enrichie de ses intérêts, pour assurer les vieux jours.
(2**) ma phrase a été retravaillée pour que l'idée reste mais aussi que ce soit correctement imagé en français, car sinon, la phrase traduite telle qu'elle reste trop lourde en français.

Je vous avais à l'instant "transcrit" le début de la correction ... et .... je viens de tout perdre ...
Je recommence ... je vous disais ma désolation : je ne suis pas, à cette heure, capable de vous donner la correction totale du 140 (et beaucoup d'entre vous n'ont pas reçu vos transferts de corrections ...) Le 141 est prêt, mais pas "prioritaire" ...

Ce montant, aussi petit soit-il, aurait été placé à la banque. Ted n’avait pas remarqué que Grace dépensait moins pour tenir la maison alors qu'il se vantait de tout remarquer ... Ceci était une "frustration" pour lui et sa volonté de tout contrôler ...

(1) Répéter trois fois cette phrase, représentant la grosse somme de « Cinq mille Livres », tend à l'augmenter encore dans l'esprit du lecteur ..., et insiste sur l’incrédulité de Ted devant l’énormité du montant "gagné" surtout pour un couple modeste. De plus, dans la logique de Ted, l'argent "volé" par Grace sur ce qui revenait au couple et aux enfants transforme forcément le gain de Grace en gain pour Ted (et les enfants, accessoirement !)
(2) « stewing gently » = mijoter doucement (j'ai voulu garder l'image culinaire ...)
(3) « old age » = la vieillesse … (préoccupation assez constante lorsque les régimes de retraites n'étaient pas répandus ...)
(4) « five and three pence… » = Five shillings and six pence = le prix du billet de loterie.
(5) « I can’t help + V + ing » = je ne pouvais pas m’empêcher de ; ici, l'expression montre l'impuissance de Ted à penser à autre chose.

Merci beaucoup, lucile pour la relecture (j'en avais fait deux, sur site, avant, mais ... ) Je vais essayer de terminer cette correction sans trop de typos, j'espère ...

Nous avons ensuite une sorte de monologue intérieur de Ted : toute la partie en vert nous fait pénétrer, et suivre ses pensées intimes :
- "Grace et l'argent ne vont pas bien ensemble", => c'est une "pauvre fille", une "incapable" ...
- Elle a acheté ce ticket "en cachette", sans le dire au "Maître de maison". (should have + participe passé = reproche!)
- Comme le crédit alloué par Ted à Grace pour faire "tourner la maison" était le strict nécessaire, elle avait forcément volé à la famille de l'argent qui lui a servi à acheter le billet ...
- En conséquence directe, le gain provoqué par le billet gagnant revenait à Ted autant qu'à elle, et même plus (il est le Maître du foyer et le décideur des dépenses.)
- ici, "to be over" = être en trop, en excédent.
(6) to pride oneself = s'énorgueillir de, être fier de, se vanter de.
Quelques problèmes pour tous, y compris pour moi, pour traduire "a stretched sort of feeling" ... après maintes réflexions et recherches, j'ai opté pour le sens 4 dans Oxford dictionary: =Lien internet

(4.1 Cause (someone) to make maximum use of their talents or abilities.
‘it's too easy—it doesn't stretch me’)
= donner beaucoup d'imagination pour pouvoir dépenser une telle somme ... "donner des ailes" ...

Comme vous l'avez compris, et voyez, cette version n'était pas facile. Je n'ai pas encore pu terminer toutes les corrections ...mais ne désespérez pas ... elles arrivent au rythme que je peux soutenir en ce moment en tenant compte d'obligations indépendantes de ma volonté ...
