Bonjour,
je passe bientôt mon oral d'anglais pour le Bac et je me demandais si vous pouviez corriger mes erreurs, s'il vous plaît ?
J'ai choisi le thème de l'écrivain dans son siècle,
merci et bonne journée !

The theme of the writer in his time it's the fact of the relation between a writer and his contemporaries has always been complicated. Indeed, it is common knowledge that writers have innovative ideas that sometimes go against the society. To illustrate this theme, three documents will be used, the novel Dracula written by Bram Stocker, the novel Martian Chronicles written by Ray Bradbury, 1984 written by Georges Orwell. How do writers reveal society through their work ?

The novel Dracula written by Bram Stocker in 1897, the story is about Count Dracula, and established many conventions of subsequent vampire fantasy. Dracula's plot takes place in the contemporary world of Bram Stoker, the Victorian era. At this era, the position of women in society was keeping the house clean, and entertaining the guests and children. Stocker used Dracula to express his opinions towards the subject. The character of Lucy, a typical ditz, and a woman with no inner strength, fits into the “angel” stereotype perfectly while Mina, on the other hand, represents the new breed of women, those who are independent, smart, and resourceful, like current men of the time. Mina is successful in her battle against Dracula, where Lucy is not.

The novel Martian Chronicles written by Ray Bradbury in 1950, this novel is about the discover of Martian on mars by earhtling settler, that show us the idea we had of Martians in the 50s, green beings with humanoid form. In the 50s, the conquest of space was an important issue for many countries because the world was in the midst of the Cold War and it was the race for space between the United States and the Soviet Union for who would be the first to go in space. And just like now or as in the 50s, the idea of going to Mars or even colonizing another planet was and still is ubiquitous.

And the last document, the novel 1984 written by Georges Orwell in 1949, this novel remains one of the most powerful warnings ever issued against the dangers of a totalitarian society. In Spain, Germany, and the Soviet Union, Orwell had witnessed the danger of absolute political authority in an age of advanced technology. He illustrated that peril harshly in 1984. And he imagines the worst human society imaginable, in an effort to convince readers to avoid any path that might lead toward such societal degradation. In 1949, at the dawn of the nuclear age and before the television had become a fixture in the family home, Orwell’s vision of a post-atomic dictatorship in which every individual would be monitored ceaselessly by means of the telescreen seemed terrifyingly possible. That Orwell postulated such a society a mere thirty-five years into the future compounded this fear. Of course, the world that Orwell envisioned in 1984 did not materialize. Rather than being overwhelmed by totalitarianism, democracy ultimately won out in the Cold War, as seen in the fall of the Berlin Wall and the disintegration of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s.

To conclude, some writers have written the novel about their time to denounce the society or technology. They can imagine the future that they could have had but also about the mentalities and morals of their times.
