Myths and heroes/aide
Message de hughug posté le 16-05-2018 à 16:42:19 (S | E | F)
Bonjour,
je passe mon oral d'anglais pour le bac sous peu quelqu'un peut-il jeter un coup d’œil à mon texte et m'indiquer s'il contient des erreurs svp s'il vous plait ?
Merci pour vos réponses.

I’m going to talk about the notion of Myths and Heroes. To begin with, I’d like to give a definition of a hero. A hero is a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities. Usually, people view heroes as someone that comes to the rescue of others and spends their time doing good and fighting “evil”. But it is necessary to question that view to extend and specify the definition of a hero. So today, my key question is the following one: What’s really define a hero ?

First of all, superheroes represents the typical view of heroes because they totally fit into the definition of a hero. For example, Wonder Woman, who is the first female super-heroine, is fighting for her country by using her weapons which are her bracelets, tiara and lasso (that make her enemies tell the truth). Created in December 1941 to give courage to the Americans after the Pearl Harbor attack, she embodied the American pride and hope and that’s the reason why the stars and colors of her clothes are remindful of the American flag. She is also a symbol of feminism and the LGBT community because she is openly bisexual.

Then, some real people can also be considered as heroes for their work and inventions or innovations that improved other people’s lives. Thomas Edison remains still today one of the greatest inventors. He held 1093 patents in his name among which electric light bulb, motion picture camera and phonograph while he was labeled as mentally slow at the age of 4 and left school. Alan Turing can be used as an example too, he is a mathematician and the father of the modern information technology. He worked at the Government Code and Cypher School in Bletchey Park during the World War II and created the machine Enigma which helped the Allies to understand the German communication and so, to win the war. For a long time, he remained unknown of the general public because his work was classified confidential. More recently, Steve Jobs co-founded Apple in 1976 and created in 2007 the iPhone, the first sensitive-touch smartphone and the iPad in 2010, the first tablet computer.

Finally, flawed heroes can also, to some extent, be considered as heroes. The 27 Club, which is composed of musicians who died at the age of 27, is the perfect illustration for these flawed heroes. The club was created after the death of Jim Morrison, singer of the Doors, who died of a heart attack in Paris in his bath. He was a rock idol, a sex-symbol but also he was politically engaged, he sang protest songs against the Vietnam War like The Unknown Soldier. The club also count as members celebrities like Brian Jones, one of the Rolling Stone’s founders, found dead in a swimming pool in 1969, Jimi Hendrix who died choking in his vomit in 1970 or more recently Amy Winehouse died in 2011 of alcohol poisoning. In my opinion, these people can be considered as heroes because they choose a way of life that consist in make the most of their youth and live now and live fast even if it means to die young. They were very determined because they had their ideas, which can be summed up by a sentence in Kurt Cobain’s suicide letter, another member of the club : “It’s better to burn out than to fade away”, and they followed it whatever it took and it requires a lot of courage to do it. This is why I respect their point of view even if I don’t share it.

In conclusion, I would say that there are many ways to become a hero and so, many kind of different heroes : people that fight and act for making the world better, that work to improve other people’s lives, that are inspiring other people or at least make them meditate on their own life and so many other ways. In fact, anybody can be a hero but not everybody.
