Why are myths and heroes so important in our society ?
First of all I would like to give a definition of this notion. Next we will consider the various cases in which we could talk about of heroes, more specifically we are going to differentiate between a modern hero and a traditional hero, for example ordinary people and superheroes. As for the end we shall see how define the limits of a myth.
A myth can have several definitions, first of all, it's an ancient story, often about supernatural characters like gods, or also about fabulous being like heroes and magic. It also represents the traditions and popular beliefs that represent the ideals and institutions of society. Sometimes a myth also refers to a rumor or unfounded information.
So, the first definition of the hero is a legendary or mythological character often endowed with great powers or abilities. He is also a person who is admired for his courage, achievements and qualities. It is also the term that defines the main character of a novel for example. Finally, it is also a person who is admired, idolatrous, such as a model
Nowadays the term "hero" is a bit confusing, an inventor, a police officer or firefighter, a comics superhero : are all of them heroes ?
First of all we’ll discuss of the « famous and traditional heroes » like Winston Churchill who has shown exemplary bravery during the war against Nazi Germany. Besides having received the Nobel Prize for Literature, he embodies resistance to adversity, courage and intelligence. In addition his speech allowed him to remain famous, the speech was : "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat"
However, there are also heroes belonging to pop culture such as superheroes. We could talk here of Captain America, for instance in the picture representing the 9/11 attack, we can identify the most protypical of American superheroes, namely Captain America. He is standing at attention and giving a salute to the veritable heroes of 9/11 which are police officers and firefighters. He is witnessing the scene unable to do anything for the reason that he was incapable to prevent the terrorists attack. So the myths of the superheroes is debunked in favour to the true heroes of this tragic day.
Instead, in this case the real heroes are the police officers and firemans owing to the fact that they are the ones who are close to the citizens wheras the superheroes are not. We’ve seen in the compilation of pictures of the attack on the world trade center, it was the normal people like fireman and police officer who helped the casualties and the wounded. Although a hero may also be a simple civilian for example in the story of Bethany Hamilton « beyond the limits » where the woman saves her friend from being eaten by a shark when she was surfing.
thus, we observe that nowadays traditional heroes like captain america and superman have given way to simpler, more valiant and more contemporary heroes like physiscian, nurses, police officer and fire fighters. Those people who help everyone everyday and who risk their lives for us.
As far as myths are concerned, they can be illustrated by the American dream, indeed we might consider Steve Jobs as a myth as we saw in the photographs and the texts of « I-way to heaven ». Steve Jobs was a charismatic and perfectionist leader which began with nothing who changed the computing habits by creating one of the biggest corparate of digital retailling on the planet. This man has changed the lifestyle of millions of people with his technological devices like the Iphone and Macbook. Even if Jobs had an original lifestyle. That is to say, he used drugs such as LSD, he had a rather marginal hygiene and he was a temperamental man with his employees and he still abandoned his daughter. Despite all that, he still changed the world; we can say that Steve Jobs is the perfect embodiment of the myth of the american dream.
To conclude I think that the concept of myths and heroes has an important place in our society. We must not forget that the definition of hero is really subjective, it depends on us and our society.
To define someone as a hero is to be in agreement with his ideas, his objectives and his way of acting. However a hero can be defined as such a little too hastily it’s the case of superhéroes, in our times a superheroes can not be called a hero. It is true that the border between heroes and no-heroes is quite abstract. Nevertheless when the notoriety of a hero persists over generations and becomes to world-wide, this hero is mythified because he deserves to enter in culture and customs.
