Hello, today I’m going to talk about « Idea of progress ». To begin with, I’d like to state a definition of progress. Progress is the idea that the world and the society can evolve positively in certain field, like the living conditions or the human race.
To what extent have african-american achieved equality and recognition.
To try to answer this question I will use documents: "Photo : “a necktie party", "strange fruit", "A brief history of the US". In the beginning, we will see how African-Americans are treated, then the evolution of Afro-Americans in society.
I/ The photo “a necktie party” is a shocking photo and shows the bodies of two young African-American men hanging on a tree, surrounded by a group of ordinary citizens, including women and children. The photograph inspired the poem and song "Strange Fruit" played worldwide by Billie Holiday who is against racism in the United States. The "strange fruit" evoked in the piece is the body of a black man hanging from a tree.
II/ The Baltimore song was written because of the death of Freddie Gray. Prince is a committed american singer and songwriter. He writes the song after the violent events in Baltimore and the murders of Freddie Gray and Michael Brown. Prince was determined to fight for social change. In this song , he speaks out against violence, ask for peace and demandes justice for all. There can't be progress without justice.
To conclude, the African American achieves equality and recognition when justice will be done and police violence against African Americans will be ceased, there will be no differences between white and black men.
