As you've been a member for nearly three months, you might have noticed that people usually start their messages with:
Hello !
How to stress words in American English ?
Well, by stressing the accented syllable, the same as in English.
I know of differences in vocabulary (sidewalk / pavement, eraser / rubber, ...) but I think words are basically stressed the same way.

Hello.
Yes, it's by stressing the accented syllable, as Gerondif stated.
U.K. English sometimes stresses a different syllable, particularly with verb forms.
In the U.S., the first syllable is often stressed for verbs, but not if the same word exists as a noun. Example: PREsent (noun) and preSENT (verb).
An example for verbs that are not nouns: LOcate and LOcated(U.S.)but loCATE and loCATed (U.K.).
You will probably need a dictionary!
