Why use preterite rather than present in the sentence below ?
If I Won ...won or win? the lotto, I'd go on a round-the-world trip.

Just think about the second conditional in English grammar, we use that for some events which are impossible in present or unlikely to happen in future.

C'est simple :
If I win at the lotto some day, I'll go (I will go) on a round-the-world trip.
Si un jour je gagne au loto, je ferai le tour du monde: présent derrière si et futur dans la principale, c'est un projet, une promesse sur le futur.
If I won at the lotto some day, I'd go (I would go) on a round-the-world trip.
Si je gagnais un jour au loto, je ferais le tour du monde.
Imparfait derrière si, et conditionnel dans la principale. Là, c'est un rêve, une hypothèse, on dit ce qu'on ferait si par miracle, vous gagniez!
C'est le mécanisme normal de la concordance des temps qui joue ici aussi :
Albert: "Si un jour je gagne au loto, je ferai le tour du monde !"
Béatrice: "Quoi ? Qu'est-ce qu'il a dit ? Je n'ai pas compris !"
Carole : "Il a dit que s'il gagnait un jour au loto, il ferait le tour du monde."
Béatrice : "Mouais ! L'espoir fait vivre !"
Alan: "If I win at the lotto some day, I'll go (I will go) on a round-the-world trip."
Bob : "What was that ? What did he say ? I didn't get it !"
Chris: "He said that if he won at the lotto some day, He'd go (He would go) on a round-the-world trip."
Bob: "Yeah ! Keep dreaming, mate !"
