Bonjour à tous
Après avoir étudié Both/the two dans le forum anglais, il me reste deux points à éclaicir :
1) quelle difference entre the two et the two of... avec ces phrases
She has two children, the two often sing in English together.
She has two children, the two of them often sing in English together.
2)J'ai lu ces deux phrases avec le commentaire entre parenthèses :
"The two of them own a house"(there is one house,they own it)
"Both of them own a house" (there are two houses, each one owns one)
Ma question : Quel est le critère qui permet de distinguer les phrases?
The two of them.........une maison?????
Both of them............deux maisons????

1) quelle difference entre the two et the two of... avec ces phrases ? Pour moi la deuxième sonne mieux que la première.
She has two children, the two often sing in English together. (la répétition de two me parait assez maladroite mais bon.... j'aurais mis and they, ou and both of them...)
She has two children, the two of them often sing in English together.(c'est plus idiomatique, j'aurais mis both of them pour éviter la répétition)

Comme nous sommes de la même année, peut-être avez-vous eu aussi droit (en cinquième?)aux "ensembles" en maths, on dessinait des patates dans lesquelles on mettait des croix, et parfois les croix étaient extérieures, dans le vide.
Ici, si on met the en début de phrase, on crée un ensemble, the two of them est un peu comme the group they make up, et donc l'action s'appliquerait au groupe. Pour être plus clair, on pourrait dire they own a house between the two of them.
Both of them serait comme les croix hors d'un ensemble, et l'action s'appliquerait à chacun des deux.
